Instructor: Lorraine Pross
Dates: Nov 14,21 Dec 5,12,19 4pm-6pm @Middle School Room 230
Children find themselves immersed in text in each subject area across curriculum areas. This class offers practical and useful reading strategies that can be used in multiple subject areas, including social studies, science, math, and English, to assist children in comprehending and analyzing informational text as they read. An overview of the Common Core Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy will be provided, and discussion will be encouraged on how to best implement these standards for our students. There will also be a focus on close reading and strategies to aid in deciphering word meaning for unfamiliar vocabulary in preparation for one of the "shifts" of the New York State Common Core Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy. Material will be provided to energize content and engage students while reading to learn. Strategies will be practiced by teachers during class time to build a solid foundation for when implementing them in the classroom. They are teacher and kid friendly and offer a variety of ways to assist in student learning. Each type of learner (and reader!) will have an opportunity to succeed.
